Batman protects Gotham from the Joker; Superman defends Metropolis from Lex Luthor. Now a ragtag team of comic creators unite to save America from George W. Bush. Their superpower? Satire.

Writer Joshua Dysart (Violent Messiahs, Swamp Thing), artist Brad Rader (Catwoman) and publisher Mike Wellman (Mac Afro, Gone South) have joined forces to create Tex! George Bush and the Fine Art of Character Assassination, a 24-page satire of the Bush administration followed by a heavily researched, 5-page appendix that details the issues involved. The comic portrays Bush as an unflattering super hero in Cartoon porn and with all his policies and practices on various issues including civil liberties, the Florida election and the War on Terror.

The team says satire allows them to grab people's attention. "The comic itself is fun, outrageous and meant to be entertainment," Dysart emphasizes. "But we're hoping that the momentum of the story compels readers to spend some serious time reading the appendix. When the laughs are over, we hope the book rattles some out of their apathy about politics and spurs them to action."

Artist Brad Rader expanded on that point. "We represent everyday people," says Rader. "We're broke artists who are rising up with what we have on a very limited budget. Comic books are the perfect medium for this kind of expression. They're cheap, they're accessible, and they're not under corporate control."

"This is not a partisan attack," reminds Dysart. "We're not attacking Republicans. We are attacking this administration, which we feel has pulled the White House away from the ideals of both parties and the interests of the American people. In a democracy, we're all responsible for the actions of our leaders. And I'm sick of being responsible for this jerk."

"We encourage other artists and lay people alike to do what we're doing," says Wellman. "Everybody dissatisfied with Bush has got to use their skills, whatever they may be, to convince other people to vote him out." The momentum of this project has already inspired other kinds of artists. Los Angeles- based funk/rock band Jacaranda recorded a 6-song companion CD to be handed out free with the book. "When I heard what they were doing, I knew we had to be a part of it." says Jacaranda lead singer Luis Reyes.
